Exploring Boston with Kids

Discover History on the Freedom Trail
Step back into the Revolutionary era with a family-friendly walk along the Freedom Trail. Register your children for the National Park Service's Junior Ranger program (visit here) to engage them with interactive games that make history lessons fun. Although traditionally followed from south to north, starting at Charlestown with the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill Monument allows young explorers to see the highlights first, ending the journey at the serene Boston Common.

Paddle Among the Ducklings
During the warmer months from April to August, the iconic Swan Boats grace the Public Garden lagoon. Enjoy a leisurely pedal-powered ride for under $5, then visit the beloved Make Way for Ducklings statues for a charming photo opportunity with the figures inspired by Robert McCloskey's classic 1941 tale, Make Way for Ducklings.

Adventures at the Children’s Museum
The Boston Children’s Museum welcomes young visitors with its giant climbing structure in the lobby and doesn’t stop impressing there. Explore hands-on exhibits including a dinosaur adventure, a traditional Japanese merchant’s house, and dedicated play areas for toddlers.

Engage with Science
The Museum of Science is a playground of discovery where nearly everything is interactive. Kids and parents alike can enjoy pushing, pulling, and experimenting with a variety of scientific gadgets and exhibits.

Meet Marine Life Up Close
At the New England Aquarium, dive into a world of aquatic wonder with the Giant Ocean Tank and touch tanks featuring live sharks and rays. Opt for exclusive behind-the-scenes tours or participate in whale-watching adventures to Stellwagen Bank from late March through November—each offering memorable marine encounters.

Island Adventures in Boston Harbor
Explore the lesser-known Boston Harbor Islands, a collection of 34 beautiful islands perfect for a day of adventure. Highlights include nature walks, coastlines, and historical forts, particularly at Georges Island. Check out their free resources for families (find out more) to plan your visit.

Experience Fenway Park
Visit Fenway Park, the historic home of the Boston Red Sox. Offering tours tailored to all ages, including brief 15-minute tours ideal for little ones, guests can explore behind-the-scenes areas like the press box and the iconic Green Monster, making it a must-visit for baseball enthusiasts.

Explore Boston on Unique Tours
For a unique city experience, Boston by Foot offers "Boston by Little Feet" tours specifically designed for children aged 6 to 12, available from June through October. For a fun twist on city tours, embark on a Boston Duck Tour, where kids can even pilot the amphibious vehicle.
