Where to eat in the North End
A hundred restaurants in a third of a square mile, and somehow the oldest ones are still the argument-settlers. Here’s how locals actually eat in Boston’s Little Italy — and how to dodge the lines doing it.
Start here
- Regina PizzeriaEST. 1926Walk-in onlyWebsite ↗The original Thacher Street room, not the mall outposts. Brick-oven pies with a century of seasoning in the walls; the line moves faster than it looks.
- Neptune OysterWalk-in onlyWebsite ↗Tiny, packed, and worth every minute of the wait — the lobster roll (hot, buttered) that every other one in town gets measured against. Go at an off-hour or put your name in and stroll.
- Galleria UmbertoLUNCH ONLYSicilian slices and arancini, cash-friendly, open until the food runs out — usually early afternoon. A James Beard “America’s Classic,” and the best cheap lunch downtown.
The reliable names
- Giacomo’sEST. 1985Walk-in onlyWebsite ↗The cash-only Hanover Street line that never shortens — butera and giant portions of red sauce done right.
- Caffè VittoriaEST. 1929Website ↗Boston’s oldest Italian caffè — espresso, marble, and tin ceilings. The after-dinner stop.
- Bova’s BakeryEST. 1926Website ↗Open around the clock on Salem Street — the 2am calzone-and-cannoli institution.
- Modern Pastry & Mike’s PastryModern ↗Mike’s ↗The rivalry itself. Our full ruling lives on the restaurants page — the correct order is one from each.
The move
Espresso at Vittoria, then be at Galleria Umberto before noon — when the sfincione’s gone, it’s gone. Walk Salem Street while the crowds do Hanover. For dinner, pick your line: Regina for pizza, Giacomo’s for red sauce (bring cash), Neptune if you planned ahead. End with the cannoli question and a bench in the Prado. Bova’s is for whoever’s still hungry at midnight.
