Sports

The big-league teams, how to reach the game, what a seat costs and where to stand for the Marathon on Patriots’ Day.

Getting to the game

Three venues, two on the T and one by event train

Red Sox

Fenway Park

4 Jersey Street, Fenway–Kenmore. Take the Green Line (B, C, or D) to Kenmore and walk five minutes over the turnpike bridge, or ride the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail to Lansdowne, right behind the ballpark. Skip driving — game-day parking near Fenway is famously scarce.

Celtics & Bruins

TD Garden

100 Legends Way, directly on top of North Station — the Green and Orange Lines plus four Commuter Rail lines deliver you literally inside the building. Leaving after the final buzzer, the T is the fastest exit in town.

Patriots & Revolution

Gillette Stadium

1 Patriot Place, Foxborough, about 30 miles southwest of downtown by road. On game days the MBTA runs special event trains from South Station straight to Foxboro station at the stadium; by car it’s I-95 south to Route 1.

Beyond the big six: BC, BU, Harvard and Northeastern fight for hockey’s Beanpot every February, the Boston Marathon takes over Patriots’ Day each April, and the Head of the Charles Regatta fills the river each October.

Getting tickets

If you see one game, make it the Red Sox at Fenway Park, from the bleachers or the Monster seats rather than behind a grandstand post. Buy from the team or the seller its site links to: Ticketmaster for the Celtics, Bruins, Patriots, Revolution, Boston Legacy FC and BU, and SeatGeek for the Red Sox. Resale often runs far above face value for big games, so check the team’s listing first. TD Garden honors only Ticketmaster-verified resale and won’t refund a bad ticket.

Red Sox

Single-game seats for the next season go on sale over the winter, ahead of the early-April home opener. The 2026 season-ticket chart ran $9–$91 a game in the bleachers and $47–$301 in the field boxes, and single-game seats cost more. Students pay from $9 through Student9s. Tip: a few same-day seats go on sale at Gate E on Lansdowne Street 90 minutes before first pitch, one per person. Bags must be single-compartment and no bigger than 12 × 12 × 6 inches.

Celtics & Bruins

Bruins single-game seats for 2026–27 start at $50 for select games. Tip: TD Garden bans bags bigger than 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches, clear bags included, and charges $15 to check one. The box office opens two hours before an event.

Patriots & Revolution

Patriots season tickets are sold out, so single-game seats on Ticketmaster are often resale; the team posts no price range. Revolution tickets start at about $41. The event train is $20 round trip, sold only in the MBTA mTicket app (from 11 a.m. the Monday before a Patriots game). It leaves South Station, stopping at Back Bay and Dedham Corporate Center, and heads back 30 minutes after the game. Only some Revolution matches get a train. Tip: Gillette allows only clear bags up to 12 × 12 × 6 inches or a wristlet up to 6.5 × 4.5 inches.

Boston Legacy FC

The city’s NWSL club played its first season, 2026, at Gillette Stadium and plays every 2027 home match at Centreville Bank Stadium, 200 Taft Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, before moving into a rebuilt White Stadium in Franklin Park in 2028. Take the Providence Line from South Station to Pawtucket/Central Falls (56 minutes; Zone 8, $12.25 one way), then walk 15 minutes or ride the club’s free matchday shuttle from the transit center, every 8–10 minutes from three hours before kickoff. Single tickets are sold through Ticketmaster via the club’s site.

College football & hockey

Boston College plays football at Alumni Stadium on fall Saturdays and hockey next door at Conte Forum, both within walking distance of the Green Line B, C and D. Harvard plays home football at Harvard Stadium, across the river from Harvard Square; box-office prices can rise on game day. BU has no football; its men’s hockey team plays at Agganis Arena, a block from the Green Line B’s Amory Street and Babcock Street stops.

Watching the Marathon

The Boston Marathon runs on Patriots’ Day, the third Monday in April (April 19, 2027), 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boylston Street, and watching it costs nothing. Three places to stand. Heartbreak Hill, the last of the four Newton hills between miles 20 and 21 near Boston College, is where the race is won and lost: Green Line B to Boston College, then walk down Commonwealth Avenue to find a gap in the crowd. Kenmore Square, one mile from the finish, fills when the Red Sox game lets out; the team plays at home every Patriots’ Day with an 11:10 a.m. first pitch so that the ballpark empties onto the course. The finish on Boylston Street beside the Public Library is the deepest crowd of the day and the loudest; arrive by late morning for a spot at the barriers, and the field keeps coming all afternoon.

Take the T: Back Bay streets close from early morning and Copley station shuts for the day, so use Arlington, Hynes or Kenmore. Leave the backpack at the hotel; bags are checked near the finish and discouraged along the whole course. Every year’s date is in Month by Month.
