The five-second map
Four colors, one rule
Red runs Cambridge through downtown to Dorchester and Quincy; Orange runs Malden to Forest Hills; Blue runs downtown under the harbor to East Boston; Green splits into four westbound branches and now reaches Medford. They all cross downtown — Park Street, Downtown Crossing, State, and Government Center are the transfer points, one stop apart from each other.
Paying for it
Tap and go
A CharlieCard from any fare machine is the classic move, but the gates now take contactless credit cards and phone wallets directly — visitors can skip the machine entirely. Fares change over time, so we don’t print them; the current chart is always at mbta.com/fares.
Commuter rail & ferries
Two stations, two directions
The commuter rail splits by geography: North Station serves everything north (Salem, Lowell, Newburyport), South Station everything west and south (Worcester, Providence, the Cape lines). They are not connected — allow a Green or Orange Line hop between them. Harbor ferries leave from Long Wharf; schedules here.

Ride like you live here
Let people off first. Take your backpack off in a crowd. Check this page before weekend plans — planned shuttle diversions almost always land on weekends. And the last trains run around half past midnight, earlier than the bars close; the T will not wait for you. Flying? The Blue Line and the free SL1 bus both reach Logan — the T’s airport guide.
