The Sunday Scoreboard

This week in Boston sports

Every Sunday the newsletter’s Scoreboard wraps the week in Boston sports. The archive lives here.

Week of Aug 9, 2026

What happened

Red Sox 13, Athletics 1 · Friday · Fenway Park · Final
Payton Tolle struck out 14 over six innings and took the win as Boston opened the series with a rout. The Athletics scored once.

Athletics 7, Red Sox 3 · Saturday · Fenway Park · Final
Boston’s nine-game winning streak ended in the middle game of the series.

One storyline

Seven. That is how many straight road games the Red Sox play after this afternoon — four in Toronto, three in Pittsburgh — and Fenway does not see them again until Monday, Aug 17, against Arizona. They leave in good shape even after Saturday’s loss, which ended a nine-game winning streak — a run that included a three-game sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles and another of the White Sox at home, and leaves them 64–52. The timing is its own small mercy for anyone travelling to a game, because the Green Line returns to Kenmore on Aug 16 — one day before the team does.

Getting to the game

Three venues, all reachable without a car — and honestly better that way

Red Sox

Fenway Park

4 Jersey Street, Fenway–Kenmore. Take the Green Line (B, C, or D) to Kenmore and walk five minutes over the turnpike bridge, or ride the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail to Lansdowne, right behind the ballpark. Skip driving — game-day parking near Fenway is famously scarce.

Celtics & Bruins

TD Garden

100 Legends Way, directly on top of North Station — the Green and Orange Lines plus four commuter rail lines deliver you literally inside the building. Leaving after the final buzzer, the T is the fastest exit in town.

Patriots & Revolution

Gillette Stadium

1 Patriot Place, Foxborough, about 30 miles south of downtown. On game days the MBTA runs special event trains from South Station straight to Foxboro Station at the stadium; by car it’s I-95 south to Route 1.

Beyond the big five: BC and BU hockey fight for the Beanpot every February, the Boston Marathon takes over Patriots’ Day each April, and the Head of the Charles Regatta fills the river each October. Check our events calendar for what’s on this week.
