On a 91-degree evening with a heat index near 98, the smartest free thing in Boston is a waterfront building with air conditioning and a lot of art in it. Go late; the light off the harbor at eight is the whole point. Book a table: Row 34 is a short walk along the water, and it is ninth on this week’s booked-solid list — reserve rather than wander in. |
FRI | Free, Friday through Sunday, Hanover and Battery Streets. One of the North End’s August feasts — three days of processions, brass bands and food stalls set up in the street. It runs all weekend, so a wet Friday afternoon costs you nothing. If it rains: showers are forecast after 1pm with a 50 percent chance. SoWa First Friday Art Walk is free, indoors and open 5–9pm the same evening — galleries and studios across the South End’s warehouse blocks. Book a table: Trattoria Il Panino is around the corner from the feast and third on this week’s booked-solid list. Feast nights are exactly when that matters. |
SAT | Free, noon to 8:30pm, the Hatch Shell. Eight and a half hours of jazz on the Esplanade for nothing, and the river is the one place a 90-degree day is bearable. Go early — the front half of the day is the dry half. Book a table: Grill 23 & Bar is a short walk up from the Esplanade and has held a top-three booked-solid spot two weeks running. |
SUN | Free, 10am to 5pm, main stage at Phillips Square. Sunday is the clean day — sunny, 88, rain chance in single digits — and Chinatown closes its streets for lion dancing, martial arts and a great deal of food. It is also the one weekend pick the Green Line closure cannot touch: Chinatown is on the Orange Line. Book a table: Shojo is in the middle of it and takes reservations — useful on a festival Sunday. |
