| Via CommonWealth Beacon Gov. Maura Healey signed H 5595 on Monday, after lawmakers fast-tracked it. The law strikes the four-pronged framework that governed abortions at or beyond 24 weeks and replaces it with a single standard: an abortion may be performed by a physician based on the physician’s professional judgment. Supporters argue the change will let more patients stay in Massachusetts for care rather than travel out of state. Via Streetsblog Massachusetts The developer of a 170-home building going up on the southern edge of Day Square had agreed to pay for traffic-calming work on a 500-foot stretch of Bennington Street — trees, a wider sidewalk, a protected bike lane. At a hearing last week the developer’s agent put forward a revised plan that drops those improvements in favor of more on-street parking. Boston’s Public Improvements Commission takes the final vote at its August 20 hearing, which is a date residents can still turn up to. Via Boston.com Kelly Thomas, who directs Boston’s historic burying grounds, turned up a partially buried and badly damaged marker at the Granary Burying Ground during the Parks Department’s ongoing conservation work. It belongs to a free Black man who died in 1728/29 — cut as “Boston” on the stone, recorded as Sebastian in city documents. The city says it is believed to be the oldest surviving gravestone for a free Black person in the United States, and it did not appear in a late-twentieth-century survey of the grounds. Business Bride Investment Group Holdings has lent $67 million against the Eliot on Ocean, the first of the apartment buildings in Revere Beach’s recent wave, according to a Suffolk County mortgage filed July 10.
