Use the quiet: the Green Line closes between North Station and the branches for nine days starting Saturday, the Orange Line follows on the 20th, and the fare gates at Ruggles went live yesterday. | Red Line | Good service. No alerts on the line or on Mattapan — the July shuttle work is done and Ashmont, Braintree and Alewife are all running normally. | | Orange Line | Good service, with one thing worth knowing at Jackson Square: sections of the platform are unlevel while it is rebuilt, and the stairway to the south end of the platform is closed until winter, so use the stairs at the north end. | | Green Line | Summit Avenue is bypassed through Friday, August 7 — westbound C trains will not stop there. Coolidge Corner and Brandon Hall are each about two tenths of a mile away, a four- to six-minute walk. Everything else on the line is running. | | Blue Line | Good service. Monday’s fifteen-minute delays from a disabled train at Orient Heights cleared by midday and the alert has closed out. | | Commuter Rail | Fare gates are now live at Ruggles — they switched on Monday, and Franklin/Foxboro, Needham and Providence/Stoughton riders now have to tap or scan to get in and out. Shuttle buses replace them, the Route 39 bus covers the Heath St end, and the Orange Line into Copley/Back Bay is the fastest way around the closure from the north. Nine days, so plan the weekend of the 8th and the whole week after around it. Fri Aug 14, 11pm – Sun Aug 16 · Needham Line. Suspended for West Roxbury Bridge work, and on scattered weekends after that through December. Thu Aug 20 – Sun Aug 30 · Orange Line. No service between Oak Grove and Back Bay for eleven days. Shuttles run Oak Grove to North Station, and the Green Line carries you from North Station to Copley and Back Bay. Blue Hill Avenue · Via Dorchester Reporter The city and the MBTA are taking an updated design for three miles of Blue Hill Avenue — Mattapan Square up to Grove Hall — back out to the public next month. The contested piece is still the center-running bus lanes, which the project says would cut a rush-hour Route 28 trip from Mattapan to Grove Hall roughly in half, saving ten to fifteen minutes. The rest of the $135 million buys nearly 200 street trees, 185 pedestrian ramps, twenty new signalized crosswalks and, the city says, a net gain in parking, with at least two travel lanes each way through most of the corridor. Four meetings are scheduled: September 10 at Morning Star Baptist Church, September 14 at the BCYF Perkins center on Talbot Ave, September 22 at the Mattapan library and September 30 at the BCYF Holland center. Chris Osgood stepped in as interim chief of streets yesterday and inherits it. Somerville · Via Streetsblog Massachusetts The Squires Bridge, which carries McGrath over the Green Line and Fitchburg Line tracks and has been shedding parts for a decade, gets replaced by a 300-foot single span with two lanes each way, protected bike lanes, sidewalks and a seven-foot median. A second, shorter bridge on the Somerville Ave extension adds a two-way bike path beside a single traffic lane. This is a long horizon, not a detour to plan around: a 25 percent design package this fall, a public hearing in early 2027, and construction starting in 2030 alongside the McGrath Boulevard project, running three to four years. | | TUE 8/04 | 8pm at TD Garden — the Japanese duo who turn short stories into streaming hits, in their first Boston arena show. | Via GBH News More than half of the nine Massachusetts members of the U.S. House are facing a primary opponent before the September 2 election — including Richard Neal, Jake Auchincloss, Katherine Clark, Stephen Lynch and Bill Keating. Two years ago not one of them drew a challenge. Jim McGovern, Lori Trahan and Ayanna Pressley are unopposed. The challengers give a consistent set of reasons: Gaza, corporate money in politics, and incumbents they say are neither responsive enough nor urgent enough. Via WHDH 7News Officers found five adults with gunshot wounds on Hyde Park Avenue near Webster Street around 12:30 Monday morning. All five went to hospitals and one was pronounced dead. More than two dozen evidence markers were laid out on the street outside a restaurant entrance. Police had not announced an arrest as of Monday. Via The Arts Fuse Jeff “Monoman” Conolly, who led DMZ and then the Lyres and spent fifty years making the case for the three-minute garage-rock song in this city, died Friday at 69. Business Two nights of Phish at Fenway pushed New Dia Fenway, the 11,000-square-foot cannabis shop at 71 Lansdowne Street, to match its busiest sales and foot-traffic days of 2026 — a record it had set on the April 20 weekend, when Marathon Monday, a Red Sox game and a Yankees series all landed at once.
