Mount Vernon Street is one of the grandest and most admired residential streets on Beacon Hill, climbing from near the Charles River up toward the Massachusetts State House and passing the tree-shaded Louisburg Square along the way. Lined with stately Federal and Greek Revival brick townhouses, many set back behind small front gardens, it is celebrated for its architectural elegance — novelist Henry James, who lived on the street, famously called it “the only respectable street in America.”
Part of the Beacon Hill National Historic District, the street preserves working gas-style lamps, brick sidewalks, and 19th-century row houses protected by strict architectural rules. It is a residential street rather than a ticketed site; visitors are welcome to walk its sidewalks and admire the historic homes and the nearby Louisburg Square.
