Old West Church stands at 131 Cambridge Street in Boston’s West End, a refined brick meetinghouse designed by the noted Federalist architect Asher Benjamin and completed in 1806. It replaced an earlier wooden West Church whose steeple, the story goes, was pulled down by the British during the Revolution out of suspicion that patriots used it for signaling. The current building is widely regarded as one of Benjamin’s finest works.
Over its long history the church has served several congregations and even spent decades as a branch of the Boston Public Library before being restored to religious use. Today it is an active United Methodist congregation and is celebrated for its historic Charles Fisk pipe organ, which draws organ recitals and recordings. A designated National Historic Landmark, it offers a graceful architectural counterpoint amid the modern West End near Government Center and Massachusetts General Hospital.
