The Neponset River Greenway is a multi-use paved trail that follows the Neponset River through Boston’s southern neighborhoods, including Mattapan, Dorchester, and Hyde Park, as well as the adjacent town of Milton. Designed as a low-stress route for walking, running, cycling, and skating, it threads through riverside marshes, woodlands, and parkland, offering a green corridor and welcome respite from city streets along its several miles.
Near Mattapan, the greenway connects directly to Mattapan Square and Mattapan Station, the terminus of the MBTA’s historic Mattapan trolley line, with boardwalks and a tree-canopy walkway carrying the path over the rail line and river. This makes it easy to reach by transit and to combine a trail outing with a ride on the vintage PCC streetcars.
