South Station, at 700 Atlantic Avenue on the edge of the Financial District, is New England’s busiest rail terminal and one of Boston’s great transportation landmarks. Opened in 1899, its grand Classical Revival head house presides over Dewey Square at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Summer Street, its curved facade crowned by a sculpted eagle and clock.
Today South Station is a true intermodal hub. It anchors the MBTA Red Line and the Silver Line bus rapid transit, serves as a terminus for numerous MBTA Commuter Rail lines, and is a major Amtrak station, including Acela service along the Northeast Corridor. An adjoining bus terminal handles intercity coaches. Beyond transit, the concourse has become a destination in its own right, with a food hall, shops, and frequent foot traffic that make it one of the liveliest indoor spaces downtown.
